Get Rich Quick?

10/31/2014

"Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction." -I Timothy 6:9 (NIV)
Many of us have gotten e-mails promising millions of dollars.  Other "get rich quick" schemes offer plans and business ideas that promise unrealistic returns on investment.  The idea of getting rich quick may sound appealing, but we often realize the traps of these false promises.

When we are distracted by plans and ideas for getting rich, we can lose sight of what really matters.  We can fall into the trap of wanting and trying to get more without being thankful for what we have been given.  God provides for us.  The riches of faith in God are the only "get rich" returns that outweigh our investment and they will outlast any riches of this world!

Get rich quick by having faith in God and receiving eternal riches from His grace and mercy!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for caring for me and providing for my needs.  Help me to cherish the eternal riches You provide and help me to share them with others.  Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Seek Him!

"Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always." -Psalm 105:4 (NIV)
When we are struggling, we often search for answers.  Sometimes the search can consume us.  We spend countless hours searching for "the answer", but we don't need to search high and low for help.

Whenever we are confused or in need of an answer, we can always turn to God!  We need to look to the power and majesty of God.  We are to seek His face and His will for our lives.  With God's help, we can make it through anything.  All we have to do is ask!

When you need an answer, look to God and His strength!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for always being present in my life, even when I don't take the time to fully recognize You.  Help me to always turn to You first, seeking Your answers and relying on Your power.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Righteousness for Everyone!

10/29/2014

"Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes." -Romans 10:4 (NIV)
We all know good people, people that are friendly, people that are always there to lend a helping hand, or people that try to lead an upright life.  We can try and try to be righteous, but even the best people fall short.  Even though we can't reach perfection or righteousness, we don't need to give up!

There is a plan for each of our lives.  God knows that we can't be righteous on our own, so He sent His Son to provide the righteousness for us.  When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are given righteousness.  This give away isn't for a limited time or for the first number of people in line.  There is enough righteousness for all of us!  No matter our past, Jesus is ready to supply righteousness so we can have a bright, eternal future with Him!

Believe in Jesus and accept the righteousness that He is offering!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for Your plan to supply righteousness to me and all those that need and accept it.  Help me to live a life that reflect my Salvation through Your Son.  In His name I pray, amen.

Joy, Patience, and Faith!

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." -Romans 12:12 (NIV)
Many people search for ways to handle the unknowns and unpredictability of life.  Stores are lined with self-help books and products.  Talk show hosts and advice columnists offer guidance and tips for improving life.  These may all be helpful, but we shouldn't overlook the advice from God presented in the Bible.

Romans (12:12) offers advice that can help us through whatever life throws at us.  Once we have accepted Jesus, we have hope in our future.  We should be joyful in the hope of our Salvation.  When we hit those lows in life, we should remain patient.  God will work for good in our lives, but it won't always happen on our timetable.  Finally, we should be faithful and take everything to God in prayer.  By talking to God and listening to Him, we can know how to proceed through whatever is happening in our lives.

Be joyful, patient, and have faith as you talk to God and allow Him to guide you through life!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the advice You provide for me.  Help me to read, understand, remember, and apply Your lessons from the Bible and help me to follow Your plan for my life.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Cleaning House and Heart!

10/27/2014

"Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls." -James 1:21 (NASB)
I will admit that cleaning the house is not one of my favorite chores, but I know that it needs to be done. Even with cleaning on a regular basis, there are times that the house needs a good top to bottom cleaning!  The clutter and dirt from day to day living need to be washed away so they don't create an unhealthy environment.  Our hearts are the same way!

As we go about our daily living, we need to be aware of the clutter and dirt that can begin to fill our hearts.  As this filth and wickedness accumulates, it can become threatening to our faith and our relationship with God.  We need to take time to clean our hearts and God will help if we ask!  God has planted His Word in our hearts, but we need to receive it.  We can begin receiving it by clearing out all of the other junk that is accumulating in our hearts!

Clean the clutter and dirt out of your heart so you can receive and respond to God's Word!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for planting Your Word in my heart.  Help me to clean out the filth and wickedness in my heart so that Your Word can grow in my heart and guide my life.  Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Be Holy!

"But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" -I Peter 1:15-15 (NIV)
Each of us is presented with a different path to follow.  God holds a special plan for each of our lives, building on the unique talents and gifts He has given us.  Even though we are following different paths, we do have some things in common.  One common bond between us is the call to be holy in all we do!

God is holy.  Jesus demonstrated holiness in human form.  We are not perfect like God and His Son, but we should try to be holy in all we say and do.  Our words and actions should be based on love, forgiveness, and the examples of holiness we find in the Bible.  We should listen to God so we can know and follow His plan for our lives and we should use the resources He gives us to live holy lives!

Follow the examples of the Bible to live a holy life!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for the examples of holiness that You have provided for me.  Help me to learn from them and apply them so that my life can be holy and pleasing to You.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Be Content Now and Later!

"But godliness actually is a mans of great gain when accompanied by contentment.  For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either." -I Timothy 6:6-7 (NASB)
Society often tells us that we shouldn't be content.  Advertisers work to tell us we need more and should want more.  "Rewards" programs keep us coming back for more and more.  Even when expectations around us call for wanting and trying to get more, we need to appreciate what we have and choose to be content in our thankfulness.

God is the source of all we have, both in this world and beyond this world.  God provides for us and we should be content in what He provides.  Trusting in His plan for our lives, accepting Salvation through Jesus, and living for Him can help us be content and happy now and prepare us for eternal happiness with Him later!

Find contentment in what God has given you, both here are on earth and for eternity with Him!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for all that You have provided for me.  Help me to be content with what I have been given here on earth and allow me to rejoice in what You have promised to provide for me for eternity.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

God's Intent

10/24/2014

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." -Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
There are times when it seems like others are out to get us. During those times, we may put up defenses and even find it difficult to love those that are attacking us. Even when it seems others intend to do us harm, we know that God can bring about good!

When others are trying to bring us down, we should remember to turn to God. Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers, but God used this experience for good, putting Joseph in a position of power with the ability to provide for himself and his family. God can take any situation and use it for good. We just have to trust in Him and seek His way throughout our lives, being loving and forgiving no matter what those around us try to do!

Let God transform others' intent into His intent!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for providing for me. Please continue to bless me and fulfill Your intent in and for my life. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

No Secrets!

"But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops." -Luke 12:2-3(NASB)
As a teacher, there are times when I encounter students that think they are sly or sneaky.  They think that they can say something that will forever remain a secret.  One thing my students don't realize about secrets, especially in middle school, is that secrets and the truth will eventually come out!

Jesus reminds us that we can't keep secrets, either.  Even when we think we cover it up or whisper it in the dark, God knows everything we are saying and doing.  Our "secrets" will eventually come out!  When we think we are being sneaky or sly, we need to remind ourselves of Jesus' advice.  We cannot keep our secrets from God!

Don't try to keep secrets from God.  He knows everything we say and do!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for being near to me and caring about me.  Please cleanse my heart and mind so that I have no secrets from You.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Righteousness Revealed!

10/22/2014

"For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed - a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'"
-Romans 1:17 (NIV)
We often think of God as being mysterious.  We may hear the saying that God works in mysterious ways.  We know that we can't see God.  Even though God may be mysterious, we know that He is righteous.

God is morally right.  He is absolutely genuine and wonderful.  We may know these things from our personal experiences, but we also know them because the Bible tells us so.  The Bible is full of witnesses that proclaim and describe God's righteousness.  When we have faith in God's righteousness, we can truly live for Him in all of our words and deeds.

God's righteousness has been revealed.  Believe it and live it through faith!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for my experiences and for the Bible that all reveal Your righteousness to me.  Help me to always live by faith and be a messenger for You.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Courteous Account for Hope!

10/21/2014

"But in your hearts set Christ apart as holy and acknowledge Him as Lord. Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully." -I Peter 3:15 (AMP)
When we have exciting news it can be hard not to share it!  Our excitement may become so intense that it overpowers or turns others off to what we want to share or say.  Even when our love of Jesus causes an excitement and a desire to share, we need to do so in a respectful and courteous way.

Once we have set our hearts on Jesus and confess that He is holy, our lives should change.  We should have a hope in our future through Him and with Him.  This hope may cause us to be excited.  This hope may cause others to wonder what is going on in our lives.  We may be asked to explain or defend our hope.  When we share or defend the hope in our lives, we need to do it in a way that engages others and does not turn them away.  When we share courteously and respectfully, others will be more inclined to join us in our faith and in our hope!

When given the chance, explain and defend your hope by giving a kind and courteous account of your salvation!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for giving me hope.  When others ask, help me to explain and defend my salvation in a way that brings others into Your family.  Through Jesus I pray, amen.

His choice is you!

"You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you." -John 15:16 (NASB)
How many times do we wonder if we matter?  As one of over 7 billion people currently living on earth, we may doubt that our words and actions can make a difference.  When Jesus came to earth, He had a message for all of us: We each matter to God!

Jesus tells us that we are chosen by Him and by God.  We can choose to accept this appointment by accepting Jesus as our Savior.  After we accept being chosen by God, then we can ask God to help us produce fruit that is everlasting!  Our words and actions can impact our lives and the lives of others for eternity!

You have been chosen by God!  Accept His appointment and ask for His guidance so your fruit will last forever!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for choosing me and allowing me to become part of Your family.  Help my words and actions produce fruits that will last forever!  Allow me to show Your glory and share Your plan of salvation with others.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Did you ask?

"You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God."
-James 4:2 (NIV)
There are times my daughter would like something and gets frustrated if I don't know what she wants. I remind her that she needs to use her words and ask.  While God knows all of our wants and desires, we still need to ask for His help and guidance in reaching what we want. We may not kill or physically fight for what we want, but we often become frustrated when our efforts do not easily lead to getting what we want.

When we find ourselves caught up in trying to get what we want, there is a way to break free from the process and find an easier way to get our desired result. Similar to the lesson I teach my daughter, all we need to do is ask! Whether we are wanting inner peace, good health, the newest gadget, a new house, or a strong church, God is ready and able to lead us and help us.  He may help us realize that we should be satisfied with what we have or He may help us achieve our goal.  Either way, we will be better off than expending energy and trying to find ways to get more on our own...all because we ask!

When trying to get something, remember to think, "Did I ask?"  Take the time to ask God for His help and guidance!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for always being ready and able to help me.  Be with me and guide me, making sure I remember to ask You for what I need and want.  Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Light Troubles

"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." -II Corinthians 4:17 (NIV)
When we are faced with troubles, we often think of these troubles as weights that are dragging us down.  Whether our troubles are physical ailments, workplace stresses, or emotional baggage, we feel that they are anything but light!

Even though our troubles feel like they are weighing us down, they don't have to!  Our spirit can be rejuvenated and renewed each and every day.  With God's help we can face the pressures of this world.  With a faith in God and salvation through Jesus, we can look forward to a reward that outweighs all of our earthly troubles!

When facing trouble, turn to God to make it light now and prepare for glory later!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for caring for me and for helping me through my troubles.  Help me to remember to surrender all to You so that You can lighten my load and prepare me for eternal glory with You.  Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Signs to Prosperity

"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.'" -Jeremiah 29:11-12 (NIV)

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." -Romans 8:28 (NIV)
I was recently talking to several co-workers after work.  The conversation turned to opportunities and signs of the path that our lives should be following.  We each were speaking of experiences and events in our recent lives that helped us know where we should be heading.  The signs we see aren't random, but can give us a nudge in the direction that we should be heading.

God promises to help us.  When we believe and trust in God, He works for good in our lives, preparing us for a purpose.  The road may not always be smooth, usually due to our choices and reluctance to follow God's path for our lives.  Even when we aren't listening or following God's path for our lives, He is working to get our attention to help us see the opportunities He is placing before us.  He gives us signs pointing to His path that will help us prosper.  We just need to notice and follow His will.

Look for signs from God and then follow them to goodness and prosperity!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for working in my life and always leading me toward prosperity and goodness.  Help me to see Your signs in my life so that I can follow the path You have provided.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Collaborating for Him!

10/16/2014

"To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing."
-I Peter 3:8-9 (NASB)
A lot of professional development in my school district this year has relied on collaboration between teachers.  We are expected to work together to plan and provide better instruction for our students.  Even when a bunch of different personalities come together, we must find a way to work together, maintaining the focus on our goal.  As a Christian family, we must collaborate and work together toward God's goals for our lives.

Sometimes we think dealings at church or within our Christian family will be smooth and without issue, but this isn't always the case.  Different opinions and ideas are present when a group of people gathers together, which is why 1 Peter (3:8-9) reminds us that we should be kind, humble, and harmonious.  We should remain focused on God's message.  We shouldn't compromise our beliefs or the message of the Bible, but we can use our different approaches to strengthen our outreach to others.  We can be positive in spreading His love and His plan for our salvation.  In the end we will inherit the blessing of eternal life with God!

Collaborate with others so we can have a stronger outreach and be the best witnesses for God!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for Your love and for salvation.  Help me to be kind and harmonious without compromising my beliefs in You.  Allow my words and actions to help others see Your glory.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Under Grace

"For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace." -Romans 6:14 (NASB)
Sometimes we make mistakes. Sometimes we sin and the guilt of what we have done lingers and stays with us. We have trouble learning from and then leaving the sin in the past.

In Romans (6:14), Paul reminds us that we are not bound by our past sins and mistakes. We are not to allow sin to rule over us, punishing us with the law. Instead, we are to live under the grace of God's redemption and salvation through His Son, Jesus. We shouldn't let our sin and guilt linger. Once we have accepted Jesus as our Savior, God's grace removes our sin and we become new in Him and His love!

Don't be controlled by sin, but instead move forward living in God's grace!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your mercy and grace that have freed me from my sin. Help me to live life shining in Your grace and not controlled by sins of the past, present, or future. Through Jesus, my Savior, I pray, amen.

Weary Rich?

10/14/2014

"Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness."
-Proverbs 23:4 (NIV)
Sometimes we get caught up in seeking our fortune or trying to get ahead.  It often turns out that the more we make, the more we want.  We get caught up in a cycle of trying to earn more to get more.  In the process, we can get worn out without reaping any true benefit!

Proverbs (23:4) reminds us that we shouldn't wear ourselves out trying to get rich.  We need to rely on God.  He has promised that He will provide for all of our needs.  Even when we think we are clever and have figured out how to get more, we are just wearing ourselves out.  Instead of getting weary trying to get earthly riches, we should rely on God to provide for our spiritual and earthly needs.

Don't get worn out chasing earthly riches, but trust in God to provide for all of your needs!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for providing for my needs.  Help me to recognize when I am chasing earthly riches that only distract me and take me away from You.  Allow me to have all I need and allow me to use it for the good of Your Kingdom.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Check the Source!

10/13/2014

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world." -I John 4:1-3 (NASB)
One of the lessons I try to teach my students is that you can't believe everything you hear or read. It's important to check the source of the information. It is important to compare new information with what is known in order to be sure it is true and correct. The Bible teaches us this same lesson.

In I John (4:1-3) we are reminded that there are distractions that try to lead us astray. To avoid going the wrong way, we are given a simple test to evaluate what we are hearing. The test has one important question: Does the source claim that Jesus came to earth from God? The first thing we are looking for is the source truly claiming, "yes." We should also compare the claims to what we know are the true teachings of the Bible. Once we have tested the source, then we can be reassured about the message.

Don't be easily persuaded. Check and test the source before believing the message.

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your Word and Your unchanging message of love and redemption. Help me to always check the source before believing the message. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Spirit's Steps

10/12/2014

"If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit." -Galatians 5:25 (NASB)
As we are trying to find our way through different situations, we sometimes end up "following in the footsteps" of someone we look up to or admire.  As we follow those steps, we try to reach our goals by building on what we can learn from the successes and failures of others.  As we grow spiritually, we have footsteps to follow, too.

During His ministry, Jesus told us about the Holy Spirit that would be with us.  When we are struggling or when we are trying to grow in our faith and reach new goals, we can follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit.  By walking in the Spirit's steps, we can know God and His plan for our lives.

In order to live by the Spirit and grow in faith, walk in the Spirit's steps!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your gift of the Spirit and its guidance in my life.  Help me to notice the Spirit and follow in the steps that You have placed before me.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

All Through Him!

"For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen." -Romans 11:36 (NASB)
It is easy to try and try again to get things right or get things done.  Sometimes we try too hard and become stressed because we are not getting the desired or expected results.  In the end we need to step back and evaluate our actions, because in the end it is all from and through God.

Everything around us comes from God.  He is the Creator!  He has a plan for our lives and He works with us, in us, and around us.  When we get frustrated because our actions are yielding the desired results, we need to remember to include God in our efforts.  We need to invite God to help us because He can make all things possible.  Glory to God forever!

Not getting the right results?  Pray and follow God's plan because it is all through Him!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for everything.  Thank You for all of Your creation.  When I try to do things on my own, help me to remember to stop and include You in my efforts.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Rest!

"Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creating that He had done." -Genesis 2:3 (NIV)
Late nights and early mornings may sometimes be unavoidable, but we shouldn't let our to-do lists overtake us. Even when our schedules get busy, we need to remember to rest. Through resting, we can begin to refuel and prepare to serve God.

Genesis tells of the creation of everything. After the creating was done, God took time to rest. We, too, must take time to rest. We should rest our bodies and our souls. While we can rest our bodies with relaxation and sleep, we should remember to rest our souls in the hands of God. He created us. He will maintain and restore us!

Rest in God's caring hands so that you can be your best for Him!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for caring for me and protecting me.  Please keep me and help me to be rested so I can further Your Kingdom.  Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Whatever...

"Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.  The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you." -Philippians 4:8-9 (NASB)
Sometimes we get frustrated, throw up our arms, and say, "Whatever!"  We sometimes find it easier to walk away than try to figure things out or look for reasons to praise God.  Instead of getting frustrated, we can stop and look for some different, positive "whatevers"!

Instead of walking away, we can look for whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and of good repute.  When we start to look for these positive qualities, we can find reasons to praise God.  We can focus on these positives.  We can practice the good "whatevers" and experience peace knowing that God is with us!

When you say, "Whatever!" stop and look for all of the good "whatevers" that give you reason to praise God!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for being with me and giving me Your peace.  Help me to always look for the good "whatevers" so that I will see Your goodness, power, and glory.  Allow me to share Your good with others.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Resist!

"Submit therefore to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you."
 -James 4:7 (NASB)
It can be hard to resist temptation.  Whether it's food, gossip, or some other weakness, we can be drawn in by the temptation and even into sin before we realize it!  While it can be hard to resist certain things, we are not alone in the battles we face.

God is ready to help us resist temptation and sin.  If we submit to God and follow His way, He can and will help us resist temptations.  Once we have God on our side, we are able to resist whatever the devil can throw at us.  If we resist the devil, he knows that his tricks are useless and he will flee from us.  When we draw closer to God, we move farther away from the devil and the allure of his temptations to sin.

Get close to God and away from the devil by submitting to God's will for your life.

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for giving me strength to resist the temptations of the devil.  Be with me and guide me so that I can continue to follow You and cause the devil to flee.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Magic Flashlight

10/7/2014

"And He was saying to them, 'A lamp is not brought to be put under a basket, is it or under a bed? Is it not brought to be put on the lampstand?  For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.'" -Mark 4:21-23 (NASB)
My daughter recently received a "magic flashlight".  The flashlight is a UV light that can reveal hidden secrets when you shine it on a special book or reveal a variety of "hidden" colors when it shines on her special rock collection.  The secrets and hidden colors are revealed in her shining light, just as our lives are to reflect God's love, truth, and power for all to see!

The truth of God should not be hidden.  God has no secrets.  He loves us.  He wants to forgive us, but we must accept His forgiveness and the plan of salvation through belief and faith in His Son, Jesus.  Once we are saved by His grace, our lives should be a "magic flashlight" or a lamp on a stand that shines out and reveals to others the power and majesty of our God.

Don't hide the light God has given you, but shine it so that others can see His love, truth, and power!

Prayer:
Dear God-

Thank You for saving me.  Thank You for loving me, forgiving me, and allowing Your power to protect me.  Help me to shine into the darkness so that You can be revealed to those that are stumbling through the dark searching for answers.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
