End & Begin on a High Note!

We know that life is made up of highs and lows. As we reflect on the year that is ending, we may recall both good times and challenging times. Throughout all that we face, we can be reassured by the consistency of God. He can help us reach higher!

As we reflect on the year past and look forward to the year ahead, we need to be thankful for all that God has done in our lives. We need to be humble as we receive His blessings. When we are humble, we can maintain our focus on God and His will. As we follow His will, we can be sure that He will lift us up so we can end and begin on a high note!

Focus on God, humble yourself, and allow God to lift you up!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for lifting me up throughout my life. Help me to continue to trust in You and to be lifted up by You. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Ready for Action!

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." -James 1:22 (NIV)

While listening to the radio recently, I heard an older song by the band Alabama called "Give Me One More Shot." The song mentions how easy it is to sit and talk about the problems we see and how we need to be living each day. We can sit and listen to God's Word and we can talk about the issues around us, but we need to be ready to use each day to live and make a difference. We need to be ready for action!

God blesses us. Each day that we are alive gives an opportunity for us to make a difference in the world around us. Making a difference doesn't have to revolve around money or organizing a large group or project. Each and every one of us are capable of showing love and kindness. A simple smile can brighten someone's day and make a difference. We need to prepare ourselves by reading and listening to God's Word and by accepting His forgiveness and love. After we are prepared, we need to be ready for action - ready to act out in His love and kindness to improve the lives of those around us!

Know God. Know His Word and His will. Be ready to act in His love!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your love and blessings in my life. Help me to act out in Your love and kindness so others can know You. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

This Is Love!

"This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." -I John 4:10 (NIV)

Our judgments of people may lead us to love - or not love - them, depending on our perceptions and experiences. It is easy to love those that are "good" or nice to us. It is also, as many of us have experienced, difficult to love those that are not nice or do not appear to be good. However, when we think about God's love, we are fortunate that good and bad do not play a role!

God is always with us, even though we can never be "good enough" on our own. We may think that God couldn't love us because of our sin. However, God does the difficult job of loving us before we are made clean or good! God is loving and wants a relationship with Him, so He is willing to love us, even when we may have difficulty loving ourselves! When building a relationship with God and then with each other, we need to remember that love and forgiveness form the foundation on which we can build. It is love when we feel for each other regardless of our judgments!

This is love...that God is willing to sacrifice His Son for us while we are still sinners!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for loving me even though I am a sinner. Help me to become better and to become more loving and less judgmental of those around me. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Clean Start!

There are different times in our lives when we need a fresh start. We can get caught up in the direction we are taking, which leads us further away from our desires and goals. As we take time to start a new year, we can stop and reflect on how we can make a clean start!

We all make mistakes. God knows that we are sinners, but He has a plan for our lives. He has given us His Son Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for our sins. Through Jesus, we have the opportunity to become clean. We can be washed in His blood, renewed and ready to live in His glory. As we live, we can strive to avoid what is evil and wrong. We can live in the ways that the Lord has shown us and make the most of our clean start!

Accept Jesus and make a clean start that avoids what is evil and wrong!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for giving me a way to become clean. Help me to avoid what is evil and wrong so I can become ever closer to You. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Now is the Time!

The end of the year usually brings "best of" lists and causes us to stop and reflect on where we have been in the past year and where we are headed in the upcoming one. We can choose to continue down the same path or to make different choices. As we prepare for the new year, we need to be sure that we are focused on what really matters and what will have eternal impacts on our lives!

God calls each one of us to be pat of His family. He has prepared a place for each of us, but we need to make the choice to follow Him. We may have already made that choice and we can continue to grow closer to Him or we may be making the choice now to start following Him. Regardless of what we have done in the past, now is the time to bow down and worship Him. Now is the time to commit our lives to Him. Now is the time to grow as members of God's family and to praise His glory and power!

Now is the time to commit to God, to bow down in worship and praise!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for welcoming me into Your family. Help me to continue to grow closer to You. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Debt Free?

As the new year approaches, many people start to focus on resolutions or ways to improve their lives in the upcoming year. Health and finances are often cited as the subjects of resolutions. Some of us may commit to becoming debt free, but we need to remember to not become debt free when it comes to love!

Jesus reminds us to love one another. When we choose to follow God, we experience a love like no other that fills us to overflowing. We can then take this love and share it with others. We need to continually remember to be indebted to each other in love. We need to always love God, ourselves, and each other. As we consider resolutions for the new year, we should commit having a debt of love that includes accepting and sharing God's love!

Make a resolution to receive and then share God's love!

Dear God-
Thank You for the love that You give to me. Please fill me with Your love and help me to always share it with others. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Fill the Air & Spread the Word!

Merry Christmas and other holiday greetings fill the air this time of year. On this Christmas day, those well wishes are expressed as we give gifts, open presents, and participate in other celebrations of Christmas. We may each have those personal or family traditions that mean a lot to us during this season, but we also need to be sure we are spreading the word!

We can begin to see God's glory in the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. As we receive this gift, we also need to spread the Good News. We cannot keep God's great gift of salvation and redemption to ourselves. It is good to have meaningful traditions that keep us centered on the true reason for the season. However, we also to be sure our greetings and celebrations are allowing others to see what God and His Son mean in our lives. We need to praise God, exalt Him, and welcome His glory throughout our lives and our communities. As our words, actions, and celebrations fill the air, we need to be sure they are also spreading the word - the Good News!

Celebrate by praising God and spread the word of God's glory!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the gift of Your Son that I celebrate not only today, on Christmas, but throughout the year. Help my celebrations to fill the air and spread Your Good News. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Gift of Grace

We may spend time agonizing over the perfect gift. Thinking, asking, trying to find that "just right" thing to let others know they are appreciated. While we search for the right gift, God has already prepared a gift for each and every one of us. We can't lose sight of God's gift of grace that can transform our lives!

God sends us His Son to provide us with a pathway to forgiveness and salvation. We can turn to God and accept this gift. From the celebration of the birth of Jesus through His cleansing sacrifice of His death and resurrection, God's grace is a gift that can save us from our sin and grants us everlasting life!

Accept God's gift of grace!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your Son and the gift of grace that redeems me from sin and allows me to join Your family. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Celebrations Every Day!

"The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven." -Hebrews 1:3 (NIV)

During the Christmas season we make many preparations. From the perfect gift to the perfect gathering, we sometimes stress over the details. It is good to appreciate family and to show our love and appreciation, but we need to remember that this day is about much more than our celebrations here on earth!

The season of Christmas is one that should be focused on Christ. We can begin by celebrating His birth, His arrival here on earth in human form. However, we cannot stop there! The story of Christmas continues as Jesus grows in His ministry, dies as a sacrifice for our sin, and then ascends into Heaven to reign with God the Father. We may begin our celebrations now, but they should continue throughout the year with praises to God and Jesus each and every day!

Praise God for the gift of His Son now and every day!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the gift of Your Son. Help me to remember His life throughout the entire year. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Believing and Bold!

It may not be in all of our personalities to be bold or stand out. We may just like to blend in or to go along without attracting attention to ourselves. While that may work for a time, there are situations where we need to take a stand, state our beliefs, and even be bold!

When we are declaring our faith in God and our salvation through Jesus Christ, we don't have to fear. If we are on God's side, we can be assured that He will protect, guide, and comfort us. We can believe and we can share that belief with others. We can be bold in our faith because we know that God will lift us up and keep us from shame!

Believe in God and be bold without fear of shame!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the strength that You provide for me. Help me to share my faith, to be bold as I stand up for You. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Walk His Way!

"And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." -Ephesians 5:2 (NIV)

Francis of Assisi is quoted as saying, "It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching." It can be easy to talk about what we need or want, but we have to be prepared to walk and take action. As we prepare for our journey, we need to be sure that we are walking the right way, God's way!

What do we want and need in our lives? In order to find our way in the world we need to have direction, which includes love and support. We have choices in our life and we can choose to model our lives after that of Jesus Christ and to walk in God's way. We can choose to accept God's love and to walk in it. We can choose to share God's love as we walk in His way. As we walk His way, we can feel the difference in our lives and we can make a difference in the lives of others!

Walk His way, filled with love and ready to share!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for loving me. Help me to share Your love with others each and every day. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

State of Wealth

"The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it." -Proverbs 10:22 (NIV)
"And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us." -Romans 5:5 (NIV)

I was recently listening to an interview with musician Robert Plant. In the interview he said that, "Wealth is not what we have, I view wealth as a state of mind." We don't need a lot of "stuff" to be happy, but beyond just being a state of mind, wealth may also be a state of our hearts!

The Lord our God provides us with wealth and fills our hearts with love and hope. When we focus on what is in our hearts instead of on stuff, we can begin to see the wealth that we receive from God. We can have hope in His promises and the blessings we receive. We can find comfort in His love and learn to love through Him. By allowing our hearts to be filled with God's love and hope, we can live in an eternal state of wealth provided by God!

Live in a state of wealth when you allow God to fill your heart!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the love, hope, and blessings that fill my heart and life. Help me to always turn to You instead of to the stuff of this world. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Unwrap Victory!

Preparing for holiday celebrations means wrapping gifts and then watching as they are unwrapped. Whether giving or receiving, we can experience joy in the process of giving gifts. While the gifts we give each other can bring us happiness, God presents us with an even greater gift that is just waiting to be unwrapped! 

God has presented us with a gift - the Greatest Gift - His Son, Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We can "unwrap" this gift through opening God's Word. We can learn about God's plan for all of humanity as well as for our own lives. We can experience joy as we talk to God, thanking Him and rejoicing in His gift to us. We also need to open our hearts, ready to receive God's gift of victory over sin. We need to unwrap and accept God's gift, a gift that will last for eternity! 

Unwrap God's gift by opening His Word and then opening your heart!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the gift of Your Son. Help me to always turn to You and to accept the gifts and blessings that You provide. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Judge, Lawgiver, King, Savior

"For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is He who will save us." -Isaiah 33:22 (NIV)

The role of government in our lives is something that may be hotly debated. Different views seek to either limit or expand the role of judges, lawmakers, and other rulers. As we often see, our earthly rulers are human and suffer from the flaws of being human. Even so, we know that we need guidelines or laws. Where do we turn for discipline in our lives? 

The Lord is different from the earthly rulers that we experience. He is not bound by earthly limitations. He is Holy. He cares for us and has the power to save us. As we learn about Him and His laws, we learn that we need to trust in His wisdom and power. The Lord has plans for our lives. He is our judge, our lawgiver, and our King, but He is not looking to hold us down. He is looking to lift us up through providing the discipline and guidance that we need in our lives. He will save us as long as we choose to follow Him!

Follow the Lord as judge, lawgiver, and King, so He can lift you up and save you!

Dear God-
Thank You for saving me. Help me to always listen to and follow You. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Prepare and Execute!

"But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do." -James 1:25 (NIV)

Sometimes watching your favorite sports team play can be frustrating. Even the best teams with the best preparation regimens can have days when things don't seem to go their way. You know that they have prepared, but they just can't seem to execute, which may mean the coach needs to adjust the plan or find a different way to motivate players. In our spiritual lives, we need to learn and prepare, be ready to execute, and always listen to our Heavenly Coach!

God gives us His Word and He is active in our lives. He provides us with the directions what we need in order to prepare. He gives examples of others that have lived in the faith. He gives us His Son to redeem us and the Holy Spirit to be with us each day. We can prepare by studying and through fellowship of others. After preparation, we need act on what we have learned and execute it! In those days when things don't seem to be going our way, we can call on God and allow Him to give us the coaching and motivation we need to adjust and be successful for Him!

Prepare through studying God and His Word, listen to His coaching, and execute your role to build His Kingdom!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the coaching and active role that You have in my life. Help me to hear You and to respond in ways that allow me to execute Your plan to further Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

"Carry On!"

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." -Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

​One of my teachers writes and posts reflections on life and offers words of encouragement and wisdom. He ends his posts with, "Carry on!" That simple sign off can serve as motivation or a reminder that we shouldn't give up. Throughout it all, we need to keep the faith and carry on!

We are given the same encouragement in God's Word. We are reminded that God is always with us, supporting us, strengthening us, and helping us to carry on. As we journey through life, we need to trust in that God will help us carry on, will keep us from getting weary, and when we can't carry on, we can trust that God will carry us!

Trust in God, carry on, and allow God to carry you through it all!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for strengthening me and carrying me through life. Help me to always rely on You. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Wait With Your Whole Being!

"I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope." - Psalm 130:5 (NIV)

At a recent Christmas gathering someone said to me, "This is such a busy time of year. With so much going on, you just can't do everything!" It is true that this time of year is filled with parties, gatherings with family and friends, on top of decorating, baking, cleaning, and other preparations for our Christmas celebrations. While we may get caught up in the excitement and joy, we can't forget the true reason for celebrating!

As the Psalmist writes, we, too, should feel anticipation as we remember and celebrate the arrival of our Savior. We need to stop and take time to reflect on what Christmas is really about. We need to allow ourselves to wait for the coming of the Lord, our Savior. We can wait with our whole being - our bodies, minds, and souls. Beyond just waiting, we can appreciate and praise God for the hope and redemption of our Savior that arrived on earth as a baby those many years ago. Taking a break from the busy days and weeks, we can experience waiting and the joy and celebration that come from the arrival of Jesus Christ!

​Take time this season to wait with your whole being and then celebrate the true reason for the season - the Savior Jesus Christ!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for sending Your Son to experience life on earth and then die for my sins. Help me to take time out of the hustle and bustle of the season to experience waiting and the joy that comes from the arrival of Jesus Christ. Through Him I pray, amen.

Use Your Voice!

Throughout the Christmas season and the end of the year, we are often reminded of many different needs in this world. During this time, we may feel like we can make more of a difference through giving to charity of volunteering in some way. Even though the "spirit" of the season may strike us now, we need to remember to use our voices throughout the entire year!

God gives us a voice and He wants us to use it. There are different ways that we can use our voices and different situations call for different approaches, but when we follow God, we have the power to make a difference. Having the self-discipline to talk with and listen to God can help us choose the right path in our lives. With God's support, we have the power to make a difference as we act in His love and truth to boldly serve Him!

Use your voice to boldly act in God's power and love to make a difference for His Kingdom!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your direction in my life and for the power in my voice. Help me to always stand up boldly for You and Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Made Perfect

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." -I John 4:18 (NIV)

We know that we are not perfect and neither is the world in which we live. We may try different things to improve the world around us, but we will not find success without love. If we want to take away fear and move toward a more perfect world, we need to start by truly loving and expressing love of God and each other!

We live in a world that is broken because of sin, but we do not have to remain in the shackles of sin. We can choose to overcome the sin in our lives and the world around us. To begin, we can accept that God loves us and we can acknowledge that Jesus Christ, His Son, is our Savior. By accepting Jesus and living a redeemed life through Him, we can know God's love, we can be made perfect in His sight. Filled with this love, we can share it with others, driving out fear and driving toward more perfect relationships with God and each other!

Accept God's love and then share it with others to help drive out fear and make perfect relationships!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your love and for Your Son. Please fill me with Your love and allow me to share it so others can be made perfect through Your redemptive plan. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

In the Midst of Trouble...

"About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them." -Acts 16:25 (NIV)

Sometimes we think of this time of year as "the most wonderful time of the year." We even sing about it! While there are many celebrations, things don't always go as planned and disappointments or challenges can be magnified by the otherwise joyous atmosphere that surrounds us. Even if we experience trouble, we have reason to celebrate. We just need to continue to draw near to God!

In the midst of trouble, we don't have to let the situation around us change our relationship with God or with each other. How we act can tell others about God and His influence in our lives. We can show that we trust in Him by not getting down, but instead continuing to pray and praise Him. We can sing our praises. We can talk to God through prayer. We can always trust in Him, even in the midst of trouble!

Pray and sing the praises of God, no matter what is surrounding you in life!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for Your presence in my life and for the ability to have a relationship with You. Help me to always trust in You and allow my actions to show Your influence in my life. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Never Fail!

"But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me." -Psalm 13:5-6 (NIV)

We all know that we cannot go through life without failure. I have been asked the question, "What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?" That's an interesting question that may require some thought. There are many things that we may want to do in life and there are times when we don't try because we are afraid of the possible outcomes. As we consider our journey in life, we can be assured that there are some things that never fail us - like God's love!

God loves us, no matter what! He knows that we are not perfect. He knows that we will fail in life, but He is ready to pick us up and help us learn from our experiences. Through all of these experiences, we never have to worry about God failing us. He has saved us. He will continue to save us. For these and all of our blessings, we can praise God. We can praise Him with our voices and we can praise Him through our actions toward others. When we are with God, standing in His love and praising Him, we will never fail!

Praise God and stand in His love so you will not fail!

Dear God-
Thank You for Your love and direction in my life. Help me to be sure I am following You and keep me on Your path so I will not fail. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Don't Worry, Be Content!

"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." -Philippians 4:12 (NIV)

Life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows. We will experience a range of emotions that come from living in the world. While we may try to find happiness in the worldly sense, we cannot find happiness in things. One of my co-workers shared that her daughter is "paring down" this holiday season. She is not asking for more, but just one or two things that she needs. As we consider our "wish list," we need to remember that God already gives us all that we need!

It is true that having "things" doesn't mean we will be happy. More is not always better.  God provides us with what we need. He celebrates with us in times of plenty and sustains us when we are in need. God wraps us in His love comforts us. God knows what we need both now and for eternity with Him. As we learn about and follow God, we know that we don't have to worry. We just have to have faith and be content in all of His blessings!

Don't worry, be content with all that God gives you!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for all of the blessings in my life. Help me to find contentment and comfort in what You have provided. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Acting Out

"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." -I John 3:18 (NIV)

Dealing with children and young adults, or people in general, we know that their actions are often the result of a need for attention. We can become upset by the actions or we can choose to address the deeper cause of the behavior. To move forward, the best course of action is found in God's love and truth!

God calls us to be His children and to act in the His ways. He is willing to teach and train us. He gives us His love. He disciplines us and allows us to learn His Truth. Knowing and following God is the first step in our journey. After we know God and commit to Him, we then need to act. We need to respond to others in ways that show love and that are rooted in the truth. As we act out for God, we can allow others to see His glory!

Act out in ways that show God's love, truth, and glory!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for teaching me. Help me to act in ways that show Your love and truth. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Cover Up!

"Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken." -Psalm 55:22 (NIV)

The cold weather is beginning to set in. If we think we can head out without the right coat or protection, we soon start to shiver. Our body shakes to warm us up, to try and protect us from the cold, but we can also prepare ourselves for what we will experience. We can be physically be prepared, but we also need to be spiritually prepared!

If we head out into the world thinking we can figure things out on our own, we will soon encounter experiences that shake our beliefs and limit our efforts. However, we can prepare for anything we will experience. By turning to God, we can be righteous by following God's will in our lives and continually striving to learn more and to recognize His presence in our lives. We can cover up with God's love and power and then we can stand up to the things of this world without having to worry about being shaken!

Cover up with God's love and power and He will keep you from being shaken!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for the love and power with which You cover my life. Help me to live unshaken as an example for You. Through Jesus I pray, amen.

Technology has become a part of most of our lives. From radio and television to cell phones, computers, and GPS, we rely on technology to keep us informed and to guide us from place to place. Even if we don't completely understand how it all works, we put our faith in the ability of technology to enhance our lives or to make things easier. Some people find it easy to put faith in technology, but we cannot forget to continue building our faith in God!

When we rely on technology to guide us, we can allow it to be a reminder that faith in God can lead us to even greater results! Faith in God doesn't just guide us here and now, but it leads us to eternity with God in His glory! Like the technology that invades our lives, we may not understand how things are working "behind the scenes," but we can be encouraged by the outcomes that impact our lives. When we think it may be difficult to continue believing in or trusting Him, we can look for the small and large miracles from God that sustain us through all things. We just have to place our faith in Him!

Place your faith in God and allow Him to produce extraordinary results in your life!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for being a part of my life. Help me to continue to grow in my faith and allow me to recognize how You are continually working in my life. Through Jesus I pray, amen.
