"The commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not covet,' and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" -Romans 13:9 (NIV)
A lot of times we think of rules as a list of things we cannot or are not allowed to do. Similar to the rules and laws we experience in life, we may view God's commandments as a bunch of "Do Nots." While we may know rules are put in place to benefit both society and individuals, sometimes we need to be reminded of their benefits.
In Romans (13:9) we are reminded that the commandments that we may view as restrictive can be summed up as, "Love your neighbor as yourself." The "do nots" provided in the commandments can guide us in our decisions and in our lives, but we should also focus on the broader impacts of our actions. When we are listening to God, we are to be showing His love. When we love God, we can love ourselves, and we can show this love to everyone around us. We can love our neighbors as ourselves!
