When thinking about faith, we may have many different images of what faith looks like to us. When Jesus talked about faith in this parable, He used a mustard seed to demonstrate how little faith we exhibit. Mustard seeds are small and unassuming, not large, bold, and strong. Yet Jesus tells us that our faith isn't even as big as a mustard seed!
Jesus realizes our faith is small and He understands our experiences. Jesus tells this parable to encourage and even challenge us to have faith...even just a little bit! However, in order for our faith to be effective and powerful, it must be in the right place. Our faith must be in the one true, all-powerful God and in His one and only Son. We can't be fooled into placing our faith in the things of this world.
When we feel discouraged, worried, or doubting, we need to have faith. Remember the power of a mustard seed-sized faith, then have faith in God and trust Him to help move the mountains in your life!
Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for sending Jesus and for the Bible to remind me of the lessons that He taught while on Earth. Help me to not worry or doubt, but to have faith - even mustard seed-sized faith - in Your power, grace, and mercy. Comfort me, strengthen me, and help me have faith to move the mountains that I experience in my life. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
