Toothpaste Words

"When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise." -Proverbs 10:19 (NASB)
"There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." -Proverbs 12:18 (NASB)
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer." -Psalms 19:14 (NASB)
My students need to understand the value of respectful conversation that can allow learning to take place in the classroom.  A friend recently shared with me the idea of using toothpaste in an activity that illustrate the point of choosing words wisely.  I ask my students to squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube, then they are asked to put it back into the tube.  Students find that it is impossible to return the toothpaste to the tube in its original condition.  The same can be said of our words.  While we may not think our words matter, they can cause cuts like a sword and be impossible to take back!

The need for respectful and loving conversations extends beyond middle school classrooms!  When we start to talk, we need to think about the consequences of our words.  Words can hurt.  Words can separate us from others and they can separate ourselves and others from God.  Carefully chosen words, on the other hand, can heal and bring us closer together and closer to God.  To choose the right words, we need to pray to God and allow Him to give us the appropriate hearts and words to honor Him and show His love!

Don't carelessly squeeze out your words, but keep your heart set on God and choose words that honor Him!

Prayer:
Dear God-
Thank You for loving me.  Help me to keep my heart set on You and allow my words to show Your love and to honor You.  Through Jesus I pray, amen.
