"Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." -Joshua 24:24 (NASB)
It is a lesson that I try to teach my middle school students and my daughter: Life offers us many choices, but not all choices are equal. We know that not all choices are the "right" thing to do. We also know that not all choices have the same consequences or rewards.
When considering who or what we worship, serve, and put our faith in, we should consider the consequences of our actions. We can choose to worship and follow the one true God that loves and cares for us or we can choose to follow earthly creations that, in the end, will leave us empty inside. God promises to protect us and care for us in His infinite power. God will redeem us from our sin and restore us to fullness in Him. Doesn't love and fullness of life sound better to the emptiness that we may have felt or that we see in the world around us? Each of us is free to make his or her choice. To enter God's presence, we must simply make the choice of who we will serve. He is awaiting each of our choices. Will you join me in choosing to serve the Lord?
Consider the consequences and choose to serve the Lord!
